Escape to Sassafras: heart of the Dandenong Ranges

Situated an hour east of Melbourne’s CBD, in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges is one of my favourite small towns, Sassafras. Named for the trees growing in the area, this town always feels like stepping back in time. You won’t find supermarkets or chain stores here; just cafes, boutiques, a candle shop, antiques and a toy shop selling wooden games and hand made puppets.

We made plans to walk the Sassafras Creek Walking Track in the afternoon with a couple of friends. We hadn’t visited the Dandenong Ranges for a while so it was a good excuse to spend some time in Sassafras.

We went to our favourite cafe there, Ripe, where they do the best toasted baguettes using all local produce. My favourite is the one with basil pesto, sundried tomatoes and goats cheese.

After lunch we wandered around the shops and picked up some tea and coffee beans from Tea Leaves. Teas, teapots and whatever other tea paraphernalia you can think of is stocked floor to ceiling in this little, charming, wooden store.
