Hiking Review: Fingal Beach Coastal Walk

Once you emerge from the pine trees, this 10km (6.2 mile) coastal hike leads you to all the best bits of Mornington Peninsula National Park.  Visit at low tide and you’ll be able to take the lower track down to the beach to enjoy even more idyllic views of Victoria’s dramatic coastline .This week’s hike was the Fingal Beach Coastal Walk starting at the Fingal Picnic Area in Cape Schanck and finishing at Gunnamatta Beach – a well known surf beach. The hike can easily be done in a day trip from Melbourne as it’s located just over an hour’s south of the city.

After walking among pinetrees for about half a kilometre, the path branches off and you can either take the high road to Gunnamatta Beach or if you’ve come during low tide – as I recommend – you can take the low road.

If you want to get up close and personal with Mornington Peninsula National Park’s beauty then you really ought to visit during low tide. The tides at Fingal Beach are dramatic to say the least and the beach is impassable for much of the day.

We did this hike at the start of Winter and it did not disappoint. Dress warmly as you will be exposed to the elements but there are some benefits to visiting in the off-season. Whales migrate every year to the Victorian coast to the calving grounds in Warnambool. On their way they pass by this section of the peninsula and several people we passed told us they had seen whales that day. I didn’t personally see any but I did get to see a pod of dolphins!

Long story short Fingal

I’ll be returning to the Mornington Peninsula again this week for a few more exciting winter activities, so I’ll keep you posted.
