Situated just under an hour north-west of Melbourne is Werribee Gorge State Park. The Circuit Track takes you alongside the Werribee River before curving back to provide views of the gorge itself.
Long Story Short:
Location: Werribee Gorge State Park, Pentland Hills, Victoria
Track: Werribee Gorge Circuit Track/ Werribee Gorge Short Circuit Track
Distance: 6.2 km return
Difficulty: Medium (not particularly steep but small amounts of rock scrambling)
Getting there: From Melbourne take the Western Freeway towards Bacchus Marsh. Parking is at the very bottom of Myers Road
When to go: Wait for a few dry days in a row as the track can be slippery
I’ve been hiking on my own a lot lately but this week was a little different. One of my colleague’s was organising a hike with one of her other friends and invited me along as well. I did enjoy having someone else do all the driving and planning. Even better, she made the most amazing roast pumpkin which we enjoyed in a spinach salad with walnuts, hummus and sauerkraut. Needless to say it was a pretty gourmet hiking lunch.
When we got to Werribee Gorge State Park we realised there were a few different tracks to choose from. We embarked on the Werribee Gorge Circuit Track but as it was later in the afternoon, we came back along the Short Circuit Track which saved us about 4km. (See the map at the bottom of this page)
For me personally, the best part was when the track disappeared and we had to do a little climbing around a rock face to get back onto the track at the other side. There is a metal rope screwed sturdily into the rock face to guide you around. I think this was the others’ least favourite part of the walk if I’m honest. But I’m always up for a little rock climb.
The gorge is full of beautiful coloured rocks that range from pastel pink through to red and deep purple.
There was also plenty of bird life, notably cormorants and blue wrens.
All in all Werribee Gorge is a great track if you’re looking for something close to Melbourne however I do think there are some better hikes to the East. If you can only choose one or two I would recommend Cape Woolamai or the Cathedral Ranges over this one. Nevertheless I really enjoyed this walk and I would definitely do it again. Next time I’ll get there earlier though in order to do the entire Circuit Track.
